California's law is based on the time tested model of Oregon. It allows assisted dying for mentally competent, terminally ill adults.
In October 2015 Californian Governor Jerry Brown signed the End of Life Option Act. The Act came into force on 9th June 2016. Like Oregon, it allows mentally competent, terminally ill adults the option to request an assisted death.
